Is AI a Better Teacher? Not Without Literacy and Divine Guidance

AI Is a Better Teacher

Recently, Duolingo’s CEO made headlines claiming that AI is now a better teacher than humans. As a teacher myself, this upsets me.
A bold statement. But also — incomplete.

While there’s truth in the power of AI to personalise, scale, and adapt learning — it misses one crucial point:

You must first know how to read to learn from AI.

And that’s not something you download. It’s something you develop — through human interaction, structured guidance, and care.

AI Can Teach... But Can It Reach?

AI may deliver flawless pronunciation.
It may generate instant quizzes.
But it doesn’t have compassion, intuition, or tarbiyah — the nurturing of character alongside knowledge.

No machine will pause and say:
"You're tired today — let's take a break."
"You're struggling emotionally — how can I support you?"
"Let's connect this lesson to your soul."

That takes a teacher.
And in Islam, the honour of a teacher is sacred.

The Qur’an’s View on Teaching

"He taught man what he did not know."
Surah Al-‘Alaq (96:5)

The very first revelation of the Qur’an is about reading, teaching, and learning.
It emphasises that knowledge is a gift from Allah, and the process of learning is a journey — not just a transaction.

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The best among you are those who learn the Qur’an and teach it.”
Bukhari

We’re not anti-AI.
But we are pro-Adab.
Pro-tarbiyah.
Pro-purpose.

So, What’s the Real Challenge?

It’s not AI replacing teachers.
It’s making sure our children can read, reflect, and reason — before handing them tools with no filters.

AI isn’t bad.
But using it without guidance is like handing someone a sports car without a licence.

DigitalDeen’s Role in This

  • We encourage the use of tech with intention — not just consumption.

  • We focus on building digital literacy AND Islamic grounding.

  • We support teachers, parents, and schools in navigating AI with balance and ihsan.

Want to raise a student who can benefit from AI without losing their soul in the process?

Final Thought:
AI can help teach content.
But only humans — guided by revelation — can teach character.

And that’s what the Digital Ummah needs most.
