What the Qur’an Teaches Us About Technology, Truth, and Responsibility
A Book Revealed Before the Internet
Fourteen centuries ago, the Qur’an was revealed in a world without screens.
There were no smartphones.
No social media.
No viral videos.
No artificial intelligence generating images in seconds. Information travelled slowly. News moved by word of mouth, caravan, or messenger.
Yet when we read the Qur’an today, something remarkable appears.
Many of its warnings about speech, rumours, and spreading news feel strikingly relevant to the digital age. A book revealed long before the internet seems to speak directly to our modern problems.
Because while technology has changed dramatically, human behaviour has not.
Islamic Anchor — Principles That Transcend Time
The Qur’an gives believers clear guidance about how to handle information.
Allah says:
“O you who believe, if a wrongdoer comes to you with news, verify it, lest you harm people in ignorance and become regretful for what you have done.”
(Qur’an 49:6)
Another verse warns about careless speech:
“Not a word does a person utter except that there is an observer ready to record it.”
(Qur’an 50:18)
And the Prophet ﷺ taught:
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.”
(Bukhari & Muslim)
These teachings were revealed in a world of oral communication.
Yet they describe perfectly the ethical challenges of today’s digital environment.
The Digital Dilemma — Technology Amplifies the Tongue
In earlier times, spreading misinformation required effort.
Today it requires one tap.
A rumour can travel across continents in seconds. An edited video can influence millions of people before it is verified. Artificial intelligence can create images that never existed.
Technology has amplified something the Qur’an already warned about:
The power of the human tongue.
In the digital age, our keyboards and phones have effectively become extensions of that tongue. Every post, comment, and share becomes part of our digital speech. And just like spoken words, they carry responsibility.
The DigitalDeen Framework — Intention, Balance, Excellence
DigitalDeen encourages Muslims to approach technology with ethical awareness.
1. Intention — Why Am I Posting This?
Before sharing information, ask a simple question:
Is this meant to inform, benefit, or guide?
Or is it simply spreading outrage, speculation, or attention?
The Qur’an teaches believers that actions are judged by sincerity. Our digital behaviour should reflect that same sincerity.
2. Balance — Use Technology Without Being Controlled by It
Technology is not inherently good or bad.
It is a tool.
Balance means using digital platforms for beneficial purposes while resisting the constant pressure to react, argue, and amplify every piece of news.
Sometimes wisdom lies in pausing the scroll.
3. Excellence — Uphold the Character of a Believer
Excellence (ihsan) means maintaining integrity even when no one is watching.
Online anonymity can tempt people to behave differently.
But a believer remembers that every word is recorded, whether spoken or typed. Excellence means speaking with fairness, restraint, and responsibility.
Action Step — The Digital Amanah Test
Before posting or sharing something online, ask yourself three questions:
1️⃣ Is this information verified?
2️⃣ Does sharing this bring benefit or harm?
3️⃣ Would I be comfortable explaining this post before Allah?
If the answer to any of these questions feels uncertain, it may be wiser not to post at all.
Because digital actions, like spoken words, are part of our amanah — our trust.
Reflection — Guidance That Outlives Technology
Technology will continue to evolve.
Today it is artificial intelligence.
Tomorrow it may be something entirely new.
But the Qur’an remains unchanged.
Its principles continue to guide believers through changing eras because they address something deeper than technology. They address human character.
Truthfulness.
Restraint.
Justice.
Responsibility.
And that is why a book revealed fourteen centuries ago can still guide us through the ethical challenges of the digital age.
Dua
O Allah, guide us to truth and protect us from spreading falsehood.
Grant us wisdom in our speech and responsibility in our digital actions.
Make our words a source of benefit for others and a witness of sincerity on the Day we meet You.
Ameen.
