Spot Fake or AI-Generated Content Online

Spot Fake AI

Not everything you see online is real anymore.
Photos, videos, voice notes, even “news” stories can now be created by AI — cheaply, quickly, and convincingly.

For many parents, especially those who didn’t grow up with today’s technology, this can feel overwhelming. But you don’t need to be tech-savvy to protect yourself or your family.

You just need a few simple checks.

Here are three practical steps to help you identify fake or AI-generated content online.

1️⃣ Check the Emotion: Is It Trying to Shock or Scare You?

Why This Matters

Fake and AI-generated content is often designed to trigger emotion — fear, anger, outrage, or urgency. That emotional reaction is what makes people share without thinking.

If a post makes you feel:

  • scared

  • angry

  • rushed (“share before it’s deleted!”)

  • guilty (“if you don’t share, you don’t care”)

That’s a red flag.

Practical Tip

Before reacting or sharing, pause and ask:

“Why does this want me emotional instead of informed?”

Real information doesn’t usually pressure you emotionally.

2️⃣ Look Closely at Details — AI Often Gets Them Wrong

Why This Matters

AI is good at copying the look of reality, but it often fails at small details.

Watch out for:

  • faces that look “too smooth”

  • fingers that look odd or uneven

  • eyes that don’t blink naturally

  • voices that sound flat or robotic

  • text with strange spelling or grammar

If something feels off, trust that instinct.

Practical Tip

Zoom in.
Slow the video.
Read the caption carefully.

If details don’t add up, it’s safer to assume it may be fake.

3️⃣ Verify the Source — Don’t Trust Screenshots

Why This Matters

Many fake posts rely on screenshots or forwarded messages with no clear source.

If there’s no:

  • known news outlet

  • official website

  • recognised organisation

then it hasn’t been verified.

Practical Tip

Ask one simple question:

“Who is saying this?”

If you can’t answer that clearly, don’t share it.

You can also:

  • search the headline on Google

  • check trusted local news sites

  • ask someone you trust before passing it on

Closing Reflection

Being careful online doesn’t mean being fearful.
It means being responsible.

As parents, we may not know all the technology — but we know when something doesn’t feel right. That instinct, combined with a pause, is powerful.

You don’t need to be an expert.
You just need to slow down.

Because in a world where fake content spreads fast, discernment is a form of protection — for your family, your community, and your peace of mind.
