JOMO: The Joy of Missing Out in Islam

JOMO

You’ve probably heard of FOMO — the Fear of Missing Out. It’s that anxious itch when you see others traveling, upgrading their gadgets, or posting highlight reels online. But what if Islam teaches us something closer to JOMO — the Joy of Missing Out?

Because in truth, you’re not really “missing out.” You’re saving your heart for what matters most.

Islamic Anchor

The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Part of a person’s good Islam is leaving what does not concern him.” (Tirmidhi)

This isn’t just about ignoring gossip — it’s about finding joy in not chasing what was never meant for you. In Islam, we call this qanāʿah (contentment). It’s the secret ingredient that turns “missing out” into peace of mind.

The Digital Dilemma

Scrolling online, you’re reminded of every sale you didn’t shop, every trip you didn’t take, and every moment you “should have” posted. The constant stream makes you feel like you’re always behind.

But JOMO flips that script. Imagine celebrating the fact that you didn’t waste hours online. That you didn’t chase a meaningless trend. That you chose real presence — salah, Qur’an, family, nature — instead.

The DigitalDeen Framework

At DigitalDeen, we frame JOMO through our pillars:

1️⃣ Intention – Remind yourself: not everything is for me. Allah chooses my rizq, my path, my pace.
2️⃣ Balance – Missing out online means gaining presence offline: more barakah in time, energy, and relationships.
3️⃣ Excellence – Instead of scrolling, channel your best self into what truly matters: prayer, knowledge, skills, service.

The “Joy” comes when you realise you’re not empty — you’re free.

Action Step

Try this tonight:

  • Turn your phone off 30 minutes before bed.

  • Journal one thing you’re glad you missed out on today.

  • End with duʿa, thanking Allah for protecting your heart from distraction.

This tiny practice rewires your brain to see barakah in what you let go.

Dua / Reflection

💭 Reflection: Am I defining my life by what others are doing, or by what Allah has written for me?

🤲 Dua: Ya Allah, fill my heart with qanāʿah, protect me from envy, and let me taste the joy of missing out on what distracts me from You.
