5 Questions Every Muslim Should Ask Before Using AI
- Adam Samon
- Islam & Technology
Artificial Intelligence is becoming part of everyday life. Students use it to study, professionals use it at work, and families use it to plan holidays, write emails, and answer questions. But before asking AI for answers, Muslims should first ask themselves a few important questions. Islam teaches us not only to seek knowledge but to seek it wisely. Here are five questions every Muslim should ask before using AI.
Artificial Intelligence is no longer the future.
It's already here.
People ask AI to:
write reports
explain homework
plan holidays
summarise books
answer religious questions
make important decisions
AI can be incredibly useful.
But like every tool, how we use it matters.
Before opening ChatGPT or another AI assistant, here are five questions worth asking.
1️⃣ What Am I Actually Trying To Achieve?
Before asking AI anything, pause.
Ask yourself:
"Why am I using AI?"
Am I trying to:
learn?
save time?
solve a problem?
create something beneficial?
Or am I simply looking for the quickest answer?
Intention shapes how we use every tool.
AI should support purposeful living, not replace thoughtful living.
2️⃣ Is AI The Right Tool For This?
Not every question belongs with AI.
Some questions require:
a teacher
a scholar
a doctor
a trusted friend
personal reflection
AI is a powerful assistant.
It is not an authority on everything.
Wisdom is knowing when to ask AI…
and when to ask a human being.
3️⃣ Am I Learning… Or Just Outsourcing My Thinking?
AI can explain difficult ideas beautifully.
But there is a danger.
Sometimes we stop thinking because AI is thinking for us.
Instead of asking:
"Can AI do this?"
Ask:
"Will I understand this better after using AI?"
Technology should strengthen our minds, not replace them.
4️⃣ Have I Verified What AI Told Me?
AI can make mistakes.
It can misunderstand context.
It can confidently present incorrect information.
This is especially important when discussing:
Islam
health
finance
legal matters
Islam teaches believers to verify information.
The same principle applies to AI.
Use it to begin your learning.
Not always to end it.
5️⃣ Is This Bringing Me Closer To Allah… Or Just Making Life Easier?
Perhaps this is the most important question.
AI can save time.
But what will you do with the time it saves?
Will you:
spend more time with family?
read Qur'an?
learn something beneficial?
help someone else?
Or will you simply consume more content?
Technology should create more space for what matters most.
Not simply make room for more distraction.
The DigitalDeen Reflection
Artificial Intelligence is one of the most powerful tools humanity has ever created.
Like every powerful tool, it can be used wisely or carelessly.
The question is not:
"Should Muslims use AI?"
The better question is:
"How should Muslims use AI?"
Our faith has never asked us to reject beneficial technology.
It asks us to approach every tool with intention, wisdom, and responsibility.
When intention leads, AI becomes a servant.
When intention disappears, even the smartest technology can quietly become our master.
Reflection Challenge
The next time you open AI, pause for five seconds.
Ask yourself:
"Am I using AI intentionally…
...or automatically?"
That one question may completely change the conversation.
