From Idle to Ihsan: A Digital Reset
- Adam Samon
- Mindful Tech Practices
We all know that feeling.
Phone in hand. Mind half-aware. Scrolling through reels not because we need to — but because we’re escaping. Not sure what we’re looking for… just waiting for something to happen.
That’s Idle Mode.
You’re in it. I’ve been in it. It happens.
🟥 Idle Mode is:
Scrolling to escape boredom or stress
Following algorithms instead of intentions
Letting your time leak without purpose
Low intention + low excellence
But here’s the thing: you’re not stuck there.
Idle is not your identity. It’s just a mode.
The goal isn’t perfection — it’s progress.
With a bit of Digital Discipline, we can shift from idle to intentional.
Enter: Ihsan Mode
“Indeed, Allah loves those who strive for excellence (ihsan) in all things.” — [Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:195]
🟩 Ihsan Mode means:
Living with niyyah (intention), balance, and ihsan (excellence)
Using technology with purpose
Choosing meaningful over mindless
High intention + high excellence
It’s not a fixed state. It’s a choice we keep making.
Even I fall back into idle mode. We all do.
We are human. But we can reset.
How to Shift from Idle to Ihsan:
Here are 5 easy wins to help you recalibrate:
Start with a Du’a – “O Allah, make me abundantly grateful to You” (اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي لَكَ شَكَّارًا)
Use your phone with niyyah – Set a purpose before you open an app.
Set tech boundaries – 10 min scroll limit, prayer time = phone-free time
Feed your soul – Swap white noise with Qur’an recitation or reflective podcasts

Remember:
These modes are fluid.
You may have an Ihsan morning and an Idle evening. That’s okay.
You’re not failing. You’re recalibrating.
The question is:
Are you choosing growth or escape when you tap that screen?
Take the first step.

Adam Sam'on
DigitalDeen/3DDad
I’m a Melbourne-based educator, tech lead, and dad who turned a passion for purposeful digital living into DigitalDeen—a space where faith, creativity, and technology come together. With over 15 years of teaching experience (and plenty of screen-time battles at home), I created DigitalDeen to raise the Digital Ummah and help individuals and families build intentional, balanced, and barakah-filled digital habits that rise above the noise of mainstream digital culture. From blog posts to digital tools (and the occasional 3D-printed life hack), everything here is crafted with a mix of educator insight, dad energy, and a deep love for faith-driven innovation.
