FOMO Is Real — But So Is Shukr

FOMO is real

We check LinkedIn and see an old friend got promoted.
We scroll Instagram and see someone else on their third trip to Europe this year.
Facebook reminds us that while we’re buried in bills, others are “feeling blessed” with new cars, homes, and picture-perfect lives.

And suddenly, we feel… small. Behind. Unsuccessful.

That’s the beast we call FOMO — the Fear of Missing Out.
But here’s the real catch: we’re not just fearing missing out on things.
We’re fearing missing out on worth.

The Digital Dilemma

Social media fuels a toxic comparison loop.
Not intentionally — but consistently.
The more you scroll, the more you feel like:

  • You haven’t achieved enough.

  • You don’t have enough.

  • You aren’t enough.

This emotional exhaustion doesn’t just mess with our confidence — it erodes our contentment, dulls our sense of purpose, and even weakens our spiritual connection with Allah.

The FOMO Brain vs The Grateful Heart

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Look at those below you and do not look at those above you, for that is more likely to prevent you from belittling the favours Allah has bestowed upon you.”
Sahih Muslim

Islam doesn't just tell us to be grateful — it shows us how.
It realigns our vision, pointing it inward and upward, not sideways.

When you feel overwhelmed by what you're not doing, having, or achieving… you don’t need a new goal.
You need a new gaze.

Du’a for Mindful Gratitude

اللَّهُمَّ اجْعَلْنِي لَكَ شَكَّارًا
Allāhummaj‘alnī laka shakkāran
“O Allah, make me abundantly grateful to You.”

This du'a isn't poetic fluff.
It’s a digital survival tool — a way to keep our souls anchored in a world pulling us in every direction.

It’s a reminder that you are not falling behind — you’re walking your own journey with Allah, in your own time, at your own pace.

How DigitalDeen Can Help

We don’t need to ditch our devices — we need to discipline them.

That’s why we created the 30-Day Digital Discipline Pack — a tool to help you:

  • Reframe your digital triggers

  • Replace comparison with connection

  • Reclaim your day with intention, not impulse

You’ll find daily reflections, screen-time resets, Islamic guidance and journal prompts designed to help you slow down and realign.

Final Thought

FOMO says: “I’m not enough.”
Shukr says: “Allah has already given me more than I realise.”

Every time your finger moves to scroll, let your tongue move to du’a.
And when your heart aches for what’s missing, remind it of Who’s present.

Let the only thing you fear missing out on… be Jannah.

About Me

Adam Sam'on

DigitalDeen/3DDad

I’m a Melbourne-based educator, tech lead, and dad who turned a passion for purposeful digital living into DigitalDeen—a space where faith, creativity, and technology come together. With over 15 years of teaching experience (and plenty of screen-time battles at home), I created DigitalDeen to raise the Digital Ummah and help individuals and families build intentional, balanced, and barakah-filled digital habits that rise above the noise of mainstream digital culture. From blog posts to digital tools (and the occasional 3D-printed life hack), everything here is crafted with a mix of educator insight, dad energy, and a deep love for faith-driven innovation.
