Open Letter to Mom & Dad

Open Letter to Mom & Dad

Dear Mom & Dad,

I know you love me and want the best for me. You tell me all the time that I have a bright future, and I believe you. But lately, I feel like something is wrong. I think I’m spending too much time on screens, and I need your help.

At first, it was just fun—watching videos, playing games, and chatting with friends. But now, I notice that I get bored too quickly when I’m not on my tablet. I get frustrated when the internet is slow. I struggle to focus at school, and even when I’m with family, my mind keeps going back to my phone.

I’m Not the Only One

I’ve heard that lots of kids like me are having the same problem. Scientists are even studying it!

📌 Screens are changing kids’ brains. Too much time online can make it harder for me to concentrate and control my emotions. (healthmatters.nyp.org)

📌 I don’t sleep as well. When I stay on my phone late at night, I wake up feeling tired, and it’s harder for me to focus at school. (mayoclinichealthsystem.org)

📌 Sitting with a screen isn’t good for my body. Kids like me who spend more than two hours a day on screens are more likely to gain weight because we’re not moving enough. (health.choc.org)

📌 I feel awkward in social situations. Sometimes, talking to people in real life feels harder than texting or playing online. I don’t want to lose my ability to connect with others.

I Need Your Help

I know we can’t get rid of screens completely. I still need them for school, learning, and even fun. But can we find a better balance together? Here’s what I think would help:

  1. Screen-Free Time Together – Let’s have no-phone meals and game nights where we talk and play without distractions.

  2. More Outdoor & Creative Play – I want to spend more time outside, playing, drawing, or building things instead of just watching screens.

  3. Tech with Purpose – Instead of scrolling mindlessly, let’s use screens for learning, listening to Islamic stories, and doing meaningful activities.

  4. Help Me with Self-Control – Can you set screen time limits for me? I won’t like it at first, but I think it will help me in the long run.

  5. Lead by Example – I see everything you do. If you also take breaks from screens, it will be easier for me to do the same.

Let’s Learn Together

I heard about the DigitalDeen course for parents. It teaches how to help kids like me find a balance between screen time and real life. I think it would really help us create rules that work for our family, without making me feel like I’m being punished.

Mom, Dad—I don’t want to grow up feeling like my best memories were spent staring at a screen. I want to be present, play, learn, and grow in ways that make me feel happy and connected. Will you help me?

Love,
Your Child ❤️

About Me

Adam Sam'on

DigitalDeen/3DDad

I’m a Melbourne-based educator, tech lead, and dad who turned a passion for purposeful digital living into DigitalDeen—a space where faith, creativity, and technology come together. With over 15 years of teaching experience (and plenty of screen-time battles at home), I created DigitalDeen to raise the Digital Ummah and help individuals and families build intentional, balanced, and barakah-filled digital habits that rise above the noise of mainstream digital culture. From blog posts to digital tools (and the occasional 3D-printed life hack), everything here is crafted with a mix of educator insight, dad energy, and a deep love for faith-driven innovation.
